H.E. Andris Piebalgs
Commissioner for Development, European Commission

The Latvian politician and diplomat Andris Piebalgs has worked on the European level for more than ten years. Before joining the Commission, Andris Piebalgs pursued a political career, occupying strategic ministerial portfolios. He was also a high-ranking diplomat, helping Latvia to play its role in the EU. He served as the Latvian Ambassador to the European Union in Brussels from 1998 until 2003, and was appointed EU Energy Commissioner in 2004. In February 2010, he was appointed EU Commissioner for Development.
